Case Study - YMCA of The Triangle
THE WHO
The YMCA–the largest worldwide youth organization–with an agency located in Raleigh, North Carolina.
THE CHALLENGE
According to data from the American Camp Association, the average return rate for summer camp staff is around 56%, meaning that many camps need to replace over 40% of their seasonal staff each year, highlighting a significant challenge in retaining summer camp employees.
For organizations like the YMCA of the Triangle, adapting to the expectations, values, and needs of an ever-changing Gen Z workforce is crucial for long-term growth and sustainability. The staff base is unique, representing the breadth of today’s multi-generational workforce. Over the years, the organization began to notice the staffing transformation and opportunities to upskill leaders in the early talent workforce (Gen Z). Aligned with future growth plans and community needs, understanding how to effectively engage, develop, and retain Gen Z employees posed an opportunity.
Leadership sought focused guidance and training for people leaders managing summer programs and site-specific initiatives across the Raleigh-Durham region.
THE SOLUTION
Reimagine Talent Co. partnered with the YMCA of the Triangle to design and facilitate customized training for three unique populations:
Headquarter Leadership
Brand Leadership
Summer Camp Directors
The training series was tailored to equip leaders with the tools and insights needed to guide and engage Gen Z employees. The training provided:
Education on the unique experiences and values of the Gen Z population.
Case studies showcasing successful strategies for engaging Gen Z employees.
Resources for refining internal processes with this generation in mind.
Interactive dialogue to address challenges and share ideas in a safe space.
Participants also explored a specific YMCA process that could be enhanced to improve the Gen Z employee experience and received a customized leadership toolkit that they could leverage with their immediate teams.
THE TRANSFORMATION
Through the workshop, YMCA of the Triangle leaders gained a deeper understanding of the Gen Z workforce and actionable strategies to attract and retain them for long-term success.
The training equipped staff at all levels, across generations, with the knowledge and skills to effectively work with and lead Gen Z employees.
The sessions focused on understanding the unique values, motivations, and communication styles of Gen Z and provided practical strategies for building strong, collaborative relationships. Participants also gained practical tools to engage and support Gen Z employees effectively, as well as a roadmap for assessing and refining internal systems and programs to strengthen the Gen Z experience at their organization.
